Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is one option Glen Oaks Dental offers to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. It is not intended to put you to sleep, but you may feel like you are floating, or a tingling in your arms and legs. Some people say their arms and legs feel heavy. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. Nitrous oxide is 100% safe to use during treatment and the effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.

Often, restorations for younger patients can be completed with nitrous oxide only and no local anesthetic (no injections!)  This is very beneficial for the young patient who can walk out without a numb mouth. When patients are numb,  especially very young patients, there is an increase risk of trauma from lip biting or hot foods.

The staff at glen Oaks Dental finds nitrous oxide helps to ease patient’s fears so as to help them relax during their visit, and to receive dental treatment in a comfortable and safe manner. Learn more about the benefits of nitrous oxide here, and then talk to Dr. Craven or Dr. Bejarano at your next appointment about whether nitrous oxide is a good option for you!
